NICE reports – Citizens' Assembly

July 04, 2024

Recently, we welcomed 40 members of the Citizen's Climate Council at SAWA. Mark and Robert presented the SAWA concept to them, gave a tour of the construction site, and engaged in discussions with the members.  For many, SAWA proved to be an inspiring example of how future construction projects in Rotterdam should be designed. Robert spoke with several members on camera and asked for their opinions on SAWA. Specifically, the use of timber construction and SAWA's impact on CO2reduction were highly appreciated. Furthermore, they were very enthusiastic about SAWA's socially inclusive aspect and the way the building contributes to greater social cohesion in the neighborhood.

About the Citizen's Climate Council

By 2030, our streets and neighborhoods must be greener and healthier for all Rotterdam residents. The Municipality of Rotterdam is working diligently towards this, but much remains to be done. For this reason, they are seeking creative ideas and solutions from Rotterdam residents, and the Municipality of Rotterdam has appointed the Citizen's Climate Council. The Citizen's Council comprises 117 diverse Rotterdam residents. Young and old, from various neighborhoods and with different backgrounds. They contribute their own experiences as urban dwellers and advise the municipality on how climate goals can be achieved.
The Citizen's Council convenes in six meetings (from April to September) to gain knowledge about the climate and collectively devise solutions for a greener and healthier city.

About NICE Reports

In NICE Reports, our 'NICE guys,' Mark and Robert, go out as reporters to interview professionals and experts on specific themes such as timber construction, circularity, and (nature) inclusivity. They ask concise, targeted questions about how these experts, these 'NICE people,' view the respective topic: what their stance is, what they themselves contribute, and how they perceive the current market situation and future.
